| | I meant to write this a long time ago, but because I thought it would sound a tad too sketchy, I held off.
But tonight we had a second mini-Halifax reunion, this time with Joyce Hoogenboom (the H-BOOM) in town. And this topic came up again.
In short, there's the American dream, and then there's the immigrant's dream: to marry a white woman.
A couple of months ago this NPO called Coast Mental Health came to UBC for a recruitment session, and I, along with a buncha Psyc students, attended. There at the meeting I met up with one of the leaders of another UBC Christian club, and because I knew that he was an international student, I asked him whether it was going to be complicated for him to get a full-time job here in Canada.
He explained to me that that was exactly why he wanted a job, to earn points that would make him a more, for the lack of a better word, "successful" immigration candidate.
In my head, I could only respond by thinking, "do you really think Immigrations Canada care about your expertise and education more than your ability to acquire a white wife?"
Thus endeth my sharing.
